Method

The term Reverse Engineering (RE) identifies a methodology which allows, starting from the physical object, to trace the mathematical reconstruction of the surface of the object itself and subsequently to use it in a CAD environment.

Upward, starting from the object of interest to the customer, can provide the mathematics of the surface through the use of an optical 3D scanner, possibly followed by the complete CAD reconstruction: at this point it is also possible to build a prototype through rapid prototyping of the object scanned.

The scanner used has four C.Zeiss optics and software made in the USA characterized by the possibility of creating pieces of infinite size in theory and with a maximum resolution of 12 microns for a piece of size 150×110.

Through Reverse Engineering we can obtain:

Point cloud: it is the “skeleton” of the detail;
STL file: approximation of the surface in a format that can be managed by all CAD software;
IGES, STEP, etc. files: using the STL format we are able to reconstruct the solid model of the scanned object.
